Punching Above Their Weight: Donation Empowers Local Parkinson's Boxing Class
We're thrilled to share the impact of a generous $10,000 donation made to the St Kilda Police & Citizen Youth Club Inc. (PCYC) in 2023. This incredible contribution directly impacted the lives of people living with Parkinson's Disease (PD) in the local community through the club's unique Boxing for Parkinson's (B4P) program.
Fighting Back with Fitness:
B4P, based on the Rock Steady program established in the US, provides a non-contact boxing experience tailored specifically for individuals with PD. This innovative exercise program goes beyond punching and incorporates a diverse range of activities designed to address various challenges associated with the disease. Participants engage in exercises that improve balance, gait, full-body strength, hand-eye coordination, range of motion, and posture.
B4P classes at the St Kilda PCYC run twice a week, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for individuals with PD. These sessions offer:
Empowerment and control: The program helps participants regain a sense of control over their bodies and health.
Social connection: B4P provides a valuable social outlet, fostering friendships and combating the feelings of isolation often experienced by those with PD.
Support network: Participants share their experiences and struggles with others who understand, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared understanding.
Beyond the Ring:
The benefits of these specially designed classes extend far beyond physical exercise. As Max, a participant nicknamed "Outback Max," beautifully captured: "Our Boxing for Parkinson's class is so much more than a fitness class. It is a social outlet for us to discuss out struggles with someone who can relate." Studies have shown that B4P classes can help slow the progression of PD symptoms, allowing participants to maintain independence for longer and reduce the overall burden on the healthcare system.
A Winning Combination:
The generous $10,000 donation has directly impacted the St Kilda PCYC's B4P program, ensuring its continued success. This contribution allows them to:
Maintain affordable class fees: The program remains accessible to all individuals with PD, regardless of their financial background.
Invest in essential equipment: Updated equipment ensures a safe and effective exercise environment for participants.
Support ongoing program development: Continued growth and improvement of the program allows them to serve the needs of the community more effectively.
